BIBLE
This week we studied about God's Word and how He uses the Bible to teach us His ways. We memorized the verse Psalm 25:4 - Show me Your ways, O Lord, teach me Your paths. We did the story of how Samuel heard from the Lord and followed what He told him to do. Our theme song for the week was "Holy Bible, Book Divine."
READING
This week we did a review of the phonetical sounds of each letter of the alphabet (including the short vowel sounds). I was thrilled that Luke remembered what we learned last year.
SPELLING
This week we did a review of the phonetical sounds of each letter of the alphabet (including the short vowel sounds). I was thrilled that Luke remembered what we learned last year.
HANDWRITING
This week we did review lessons of letters we learned last year.
MATH
This week we focused on number order. We did the numbers 0-10 forward and backwards. I was really happy that Luke did great going either way (ie 8,9,10 and 7,6,5).
SCIENCE
This week we started working on the 1st day of creation. We are working on memorizing Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
HISTORY
This week we started working on God's Story (His Story AKA History). It was a great intro and we will finish up next week. We drew our family tree and focused on how God has a plan for everything from Creation through Christ through today waiting for Christ to return.
GEOGRAPHY
This week we went to China. We located China on the map, colored the map, colored and learned about the flag, learned fascinating facts about China, learned "Hello" and "Thank You" in Mandarin, made a lapbook entry, made Chinese lanterns, made a Chinese fan, and went out for Chinese food. ELECTIVES
SPANISH
This week we made an intro page and learned "Me llamo (name)".
PIANO
We didn't do a piano lesson this week.
MUSIC
We didn't study a composer this week because we didn't have a composer for China.
ART
We didn't study an artist this week because we didn't have an artist for China.
PE
We went to the park 3 days and the pool 2 days. Not to mention the running around the house. ;)
CO-OP
We officially start Co-Op next week, but we did take a tour on Thursday and met some new homeschool friends. :)

What We Are Using: Teach Them Spanish K
How I Found It: I was perusing curriculum at The Homeschool Gathering Place and found this great resource.
Why I Chose It: It is really simple and breaks it down by category (numbers, colors, places, etc). It has a few activities for each category so we can work on it for a few weeks.
What Will We Do? Each week we will do an activity and during the week we will work on reviewing the activity. We will play BINGO to learn some words as well.
I think this will be a great start to learning Spanish.

Daily Schedules
Since school started back last week, we have slowly been getting into a routine/rhythm. Going into a new year, I never quite know what our schedule is going to look like, but being completely OCD, I try my best to plan it out and then tweak as necessary. This year has been no different.
I thought that school would take 3-4 hours, but after starting have realized it will only take 1 1/2 - 2 hours (maybe a little more if the subjects get tougher), so that really changes our previously planned schedule.
I know that I always enjoy looking at people's schedules to figure out ways that might work for our family, so here goes:
MONDAY

What We Are Using: Singapore Math
How I Found It: My friend, Holly, showed me this series at her house and I was in love with it.
Why I Chose It: It is a great system that builds on itself. You learn the thought process behind multiplication and division even in the early grades. It is great. I love how colorful it is, how you have a textbook and a workbook. It is really nicely done.
What Will We Do? Each day we will read from the textbook and go over practice exercises and then we will complete a worksheet that covers the material.
Overall I love the curriculum we are using so far. I think we will really like it.

Why I Chose It: It is a great system that builds on itself. The teacher and student work together with some tiles and other tools to learn how to spell. It is great because it isn't just memorizing lists.
What Will We Do? In conjunction with our reading curriculum, we will be doing daily lessons to learn each exercise. We started with short vowels, then the rest of the phonograms, then the long vowels, and then build on it. We will work through the curriculum building each day/week/level.
Overall I love the curriculum we are using so far. I think we will really like it.

Kindergarten Curriculum - Reading
What We Are Using: ABeka Readers/Handbook and Ordinary Parents' Guide to Teaching Reading
How I Found It: My friend, Vicky, works at The Homeschool Gathering Place and has homeschooled 3 children (1 is almost done with high school). She has a ton of experience with homeschooling and curriculum. She was kind enough to gift me the book, Ordinary Parents' Guide to Teaching Reading, and it is awesome. ABeka readers and handbook were suggested to me from another great homeschooling friend.
Why I Chose It: It really chose me. LOL! It is great because it goes step-by-step in the correct order of phonetically learning how to read. I love that each lesson is in sequential order, reviews previous lessons, and tells me exactly what to do and say. Luke has learned very quickly from this book. I chose ABeka readers because they are great and are in order (I love order).
What Will We Do? In conjunction with our spelling curriculum, we will be doing daily lessons to learn each exercise. We started with short vowels, then the rest of the phonograms, then the long vowels, and then build on it. Expedition Earth - Asia - China
This week Luke and I started our trek across the globe. Our first stop was China. It was a great country to visit and we learned so many interesting things.
The first day we stamped our passports and found China on our map. Luke colored the map of China (sorry, I don't have a picture) and we wrote down some key things about China.
Each week we will look up words in each language. The language of China is Mandarin. Here are the words we looked up in Mandarin:
Here is the flag of China: (the red represents the revolution, the big yellow/gold star represents Communism, and the 4 little yellow/gold stars represent the classes of people)

I think it turned out great. :)

We also read some great books related to China including: The Story of Ping, 5 Chinese Brothers, Stone Soup, Panda Kindergarten, and The Runaway Wok.
He also played Chinese checkers with Lee. We plan to go out for Chinese food this weekend.

The most important thing we do each week is pray for the people of China each day. We specifically prayed for missionaries, lost people, and for growth despite the Communist government.
We also read some great books related to China including: The Story of Ping, 5 Chinese Brothers, Stone Soup, Panda Kindergarten, and The Runaway Wok.
He also played Chinese checkers with Lee. We plan to go out for Chinese food this weekend.
Next stop: Japan
